Welcome to WordPower®

WordPower is a flexible and powerful AAC vocabulary system designed to help individuals communicate clearly, confidently, and independently. Created by speech-language pathologist Nancy Inman, WordPower is shaped by more than 25 years of clinical experience working alongside AAC users and their families.

WordPower is built to support real-life communication—at home, at school, and in the community. It is designed to grow with the user, offering consistency, structure, and meaningful language every step of the way.

A System That Grows With the User

Over time, WordPower has expanded into a family of vocabulary options that support a wide range of ages, abilities, and access needs. While WordPower is available across different devices, apps, and manufacturers (PRC-Saltillo, TouchChat app, Grid), all WordPower files share the same underlying design. This consistency helps users and families feel confident, even as communication needs change or new systems are introduced.

WordPower is available in English, Spanish, French, and Mandarin. Options for access include touch, scanning, head tracking, and eye-tracking access. Note: access options may vary by the platform the vocabulary is running on. Different layout sizes and levels of picture support allow WordPower to be tailored to individual preferences and needs.

How WordPower Is Designed

The design of WordPower is guided by a clear set of principles that shape how the vocabulary works and how language is built.

At its core, WordPower is word-based, meaning users are encouraged to create their own messages—not just select pre-set phrases. This supports literacy and helps users express new ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

WordPower is built around core vocabulary—the words we use most often in everyday speech. These words are always easy to find and are organized in a logical, predictable way to support learning and confidence.

To make communication faster and easier, WordPower offers reduced keystrokes to support efficient message building through (examples show WordPower60 Basic SS for TouchChat, Via, NovaChat):

Logical next words: After selecting a core word, the system suggests logical follow-up words or phrases. For example, when selecting the verb turn, logical next words appear including:

  • turn over
  • turn it up
  • turn the page
  • turn around
  • turn it off
  • turn it down

Check out other logical next words from the core page such as:

  • come…(back, over)
  • get…(ready, dressed)
  • go…(for a walk, shopping)
  • my/your…(turn, favorite)
  • open…(the door, the book)
  • put…(back, away)
  • take…(a break, a bath)
  • good…(job, idea)
  • more…(than)
  • that…(one, way)
  • a…(lot, problem)
  • the…(best, one)
  • in…(front, back)
  • all…(done, gone)

Word completion: after selecting other core words, the system may suggest compound word options or grammatical endings such as:

  • up-side
  • out-side
  • down-side
  • down-stairs
  • finish-ed
  • up-stairs
  • help-ed
  • help-ing
  • cold-er
  • cold-est

Logical linking verbs: Some verbs link to the corresponding category.
For example, eat is linked to a food page.

Other examples from the main include the verbs:
drink, play, read, watch

The layouts are designed to be logical and intuitive, helping users and communication partners find words quickly and stay engaged in conversation.

Visual Support and Spelling Options

WordPower provides ample symbol support throughout the system to help with understanding and learning. Symbols are carefully chosen to be clear and meaningful.

Every WordPower file also includes access to spelling with word prediction, allowing users to say anything they want—even if the word isn’t already on the screen.

Designed for Real Communication

The goal of WordPower is simple: to support meaningful, efficient communication in everyday life. By combining thoughtful organization, consistent design, and powerful language tools, WordPower helps users build messages, share ideas, and connect with others.
