My daughter Ava, who is now a young adult, is unable to speak due to cerebral palsy. One of my primary fears when she was young was that she might not be able to effectively communicate her thoughts. I was profoundly relieved when she began using a speech generating device at three years old.
Her communication skills increased exponentially with the introduction of Picture WordPower when she was six years old due to the program’s intuitive and elegantly logical organization, which makes it completely user-friendly from the start. She has benefitted greatly over the years as the software has been routinely updated to incorporate the most current technology, including increasingly sophisticated word prediction capabilities.

As a parent, switching my daughter to TouchChat with WordPower was one of the best decisions we have made for her communication. Almost immediately, I could see how much easier it was for her to use. The snap-back feature alone made a huge difference. She no longer has to work so hard to get back to where she started, which saves extra taps and helps reduce frustration.
What I love most is watching her confidence grow. WordPower feels natural for her to navigate, and because the layout is predictable, she spends less time searching and more time truly communicating. That has led to fewer meltdowns and more meaningful moments where she can clearly express what she wants or how she feels.
One of the biggest changes we have noticed is how much more independent she has become in everyday situations. She is now able to order her own food at restaurants using her device, which has been incredibly empowering for her and deeply meaningful for us as a family. Seeing her communicate directly with others, instead of through us, is something I will never take for granted.
From a parent’s perspective, WordPower is also very easy to customize. Being able to adjust vocabulary and layouts as my daughter’s skills grow gives me so much hope for her future. I also love that she can text other iOS users directly from WordPower, an essential, real world skill that helps her stay connected in today’s world.

Nancy Inman began working with our non-verbal son over 20 years ago and it was life-changing. He had the cognitive ability to understand what was being said and wanted desperately to be able to respond, but due to his stroke in utero he could not form any words. We tried all sorts of ways with sign language, pictures, gestures to help him. However, without any support from his schools or therapists, he had limited success.
We met Nancy at Kennedy Krieger Institute when our son was 10 years old. From that day forward, our son was able to communicate with her WordPower program. He even taught himself to read with her program by typing in words from his books and hearing them on his device.
It has truly been a godsend for him. He very quickly moved ahead as Nancy continued to develop her software.
He has so much to say and so many questions to ask. We will be forever thankful for everything Nancy has done and continues to do for our son.
